Do you even need a visa?

Brazil has 90-day tourist visa exemption agreements with around 90 countries (including the EU, Mercosur members, and Japan). The exemption depends on the nationality on your passport, not your country of residence or departure.

⚠️ Most African and Asian countries are not on the exemption list, meaning a visa is usually required even for short visits. Confirm your exact status with the Brazilian consulate in your country.

Main visa types

VIVIS (Visit Visa): tourism, short business, conferences — no intent to reside or take paid work from a Brazilian source. Up to 90 days, extendable by another 90
VITEM IV (Study): for enrollment at a Brazilian educational institution; does not allow paid work
VITEM V (Work): the most common for employees, requires a CLT employment contract with a Brazilian company that sponsors it via the MigranteWeb system
VITEM XI (Family reunification): to join a spouse, child, or parent who is Brazilian or already a resident
VITEM XIII (Mercosur Agreement): exclusive to nationals of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay
VITEM XIV (Digital Nomad): for remote workers employed by a company outside Brazil, with proof of income (around US$1,500/month, subject to change)
VIPER (Permanent Visa): specific cases set by law, such as Uruguayan nationals, investment, marriage, or advanced age

Basic application steps

Determine the correct visa type for your real purpose of travel
Fill out the online application form on the Itamaraty website
Book an appointment at the consulate/embassy responsible for your country
Pay the consular fee (varies by visa type and country)
Attend with all original documents on the scheduled date

⚠️ Important: a Brazilian visa is never issued inside Brazil or at the airport — it must be obtained from your country's consulate/embassy before you travel.

Documents generally required

Passport valid for at least 6 months after your planned departure from Brazil
Recent photo meeting specifications
Proof of round-trip ticket (or travel itinerary)
Proof of accommodation in Brazil
Proof of financial means or income source
Additional documents depending on visa type (work contract, admission letter, marriage certificate...)

After arrival: don't forget to register

After entering Brazil on a residence visa (VITEM), you have exactly 90 days to register with the Federal Police and obtain your CRNM. This registration turns your visa into actual, renewable residency.
